Air Purification
What is the purpose of air cleaners and UV lights?
Air cleaners remove up to 98% of particles down to one micron. They negatively charge particles as they pass through the filter causing them to stick to the positive side of the filter. UV lights kill odors and harmful mold and bacteria. They use ultraviolet light to purify the air.
Why are they important?
Air purifiers and air cleaners are important because things like dust, pollen, and pet dander can act as allergens, triggering allergies in sensitive people. Smoke particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can pose a risk to health. Exposure to various components such as VOCs increases the likelihood of experiencing symptoms of sick building syndrome. Additionally, with the advancement in technology, air purifiers are becoming increasingly capable of capturing a greater number of bacterial, virus, and DNA damaging particulates. Air purifiers are used to reduce the concentration of these airborne contaminants and are very useful for people who suffer from allergies and asthma.
What air purification maintenance is required?
Air cleaners need filters replaced on yearly basis. UV lights need bulbs replaced every 3 years and bulbs needs to be wiped off yearly.
Adams Heating and Cooling can help you with all your Kalamazoo air purification needs. If a new air purifier is what you need, Adams Heating & Cooling sells Aprilaire models 2210, 2410, 4200, 4400, and 5000
Humidifiers & Dehumidifiers
Why is a dehumidifier important to have?
Humid air can cause mold and mildew to grow inside homes, which pose various health risks. Very humid climates or air make some people extremely uncomfortable, causing excessive sweating that can’t evaporate in the already-moisture-saturated air. It can also cause condensation that can disrupt sleeping, or prevent laundry from drying thoroughly enough to prevent mustiness. Higher humidity is also preferred by most pests, including clothes moths, fleas, cockroaches, woodlice and dust mites. For all of these reasons, controlling the amount of moisture in the air is very important for your house, and there are several versions of humidifiers and dehumidifiers that you can choose from.
What types of humidifiers and dehumidifiers are there?
On the humidifier side, there are point-of-use versions, which are commonly used to humidify a single room, and whole-house or furnace humidifiers, which connect to a home’s HVAC system to provide humidity to the entire house. Similarly, dehumidifiers can be purchased as stand alone items for smaller areas, and they can be attached to your air conditioner to work more efficiently and with your entire house.
How are humidifiers and dehumidifiers maintained?
Adams Heating and Cooling can provide maintenance and repair for your units, if applicable. We offer annual maintenance services for both humidifiers and dehumidifiers that include cleaning of the units and replacement of necessary filters/water pads.

Who needs Zone Dampers?
Dampers are good for anyone with forced air heating and cooling that has uneven heat or cooling problems, and wants total comfort. A zone damper is a specific type of damper used to control the flow of air in an HVAC heating or cooling system. In order to improve efficiency and occupant comfort, HVAC systems are commonly divided up into multiple zones. For example, in a house, the main floor may be served by one heating zone while the upstairs bedrooms are served by another. In this way, the heat can be directed principally to the main floor during the day and principally to the bedrooms at night, allowing the unoccupied areas to cool down.
What is the advantage of programmable thermostats?
Thermostats are installed in rooms or various floors to control particular areas heating and cooling. A programmable thermostat allows you to change the temperature at different times of the day. For instance, if you like it cooler at night, you can set the thermostat to a cooler temperature at night and a warmer temperature in the morning. You can also set a different temperature schedule for specific days of the week.
What maintenance is required?
While no maintenance is needed for zone dampers or programmable thermostats, the damper system has red and green indicator lights to show if dampers are opened or closed allowing home owners to know if system is working properly.
Adams Heating and Cooling sells all zone damper models in the EWC Controls brand.
